چکیده

Measurements of coordinated motion in flocks are necessary to evaluate their performance. In this work, a set of quantitative metrics to evaluate the performance of the spatial features exhibited by flocks are introduced and applied to the wellknown boids of Reynolds. Our metrics are based on quantitative indicators that have been used to evaluate fish schools. These indicators are revisited and extended as a set of three new metrics that can be used to evaluate and design flocks.

Predatory fish select for coordinated collective motion in virtual prey.

Movement in animal groups is highly varied and ranges from seemingly disordered motion in swarms to coordinated aligned motion in flocks and schools. These social interactions are often thought to reduce risk from predators, despite a lack of direct evidence. We investigated risk-related selection for collective motion by allowing real predators (bluegill sunfish) to hunt mobile virtual prey. B...

Attraction Based Models of Collective Motion

Strömbom, D. 2013. Attraction Based Models of Collective Motion. Department of Mathematics. Uppsala Dissertations in Mathematics 82. 35 pp. Uppsala. ISBN 978-91-506-2368-0. Animal groups often exhibit highly coordinated collective motion in a variety of situations. For example, bird flocks, schools of fish, a flock of sheep being herded by a dog and highly efficient traffic on an ant trail. Alt...

Limited interactions in flocks: relating model simulations to empirical data.

The mechanism of self-organization resulting in coordinated collective motion has received wide attention from a range of scientists interested in both its technical and biological relevance. Models have been highly influential in highlighting how collective motion can be produced from purely local interactions between individuals. Typical models in this field are termed 'metric' because each i...

The Role of the Dynamics of Relative Motion in Information Passing in Natural and Engineered Collective Motion

The breathtaking motions of natural groups such as bird flocks and fish schools have been a major inspiration for research in the development of control algorithms for multi-robot systems. A main thrust of research in this area is to understand how the interconnections among individual behaviors result in high-performing group behaviors. In this dissertation, we are concerned with how individua...

News Feature: The cells that flock together.

Flesh really does crawl. Crowds of cells can surge forward together, form gyrating swirls and waves, segregate into types, and send off meandering tendrils or mobile exploratory clusters. Collective cell motions are crucial for everything from embryo development to wound healing to cancer metastasis. These cell colonies seem to move in concert, almost like flocks of birds, shoals of fish, or he...
